Daytona vs Gainesville II 2005

Daytona Beach Vs.Gainesville
At Gainesville
3/12/05

Daytona travelled very well out to Gainesville, bringing close to two full sides with fans, even the entire Vesely Clan made the trek!  After the first meeting, over a month ago, Daytona realized it needed to put in some hard work both on the lineout and in the scrum.  This hard work was evident when the open kick off was knocked on! Daytona quickly packed down and blew Gainesville off the mark.

The first 20 minutes saw Daytona attacking fiercley, but squandering opportunity after opportunity.  The coconuts continually were Knocking On the ball, committing penaltys, and running out of bounds.  The attack proved to overwhelming for the gainesville side and Dayton finally capitalized on a back line play where Alexis Bairstow sent Mike Berceli off into space for the first try of the afternoon.

This however did not wake the daytona side up.  They continued to knock on balls, run sideways, and committ penaltys.  This poor play finally caught up to them when Brian "Hollywood" Richardson was caught on all fours playing the ball.  The set up a 40+ Meter kick at goal to bring the Hogs within 2.

Both teams would squander several opportunities near the goal line.  Then as the first half was winding down the coconuts were given another opportunity.  A Daytona line out inside the Gainesville 22.  The quick line out set up the backs for fullback Alexis Bairstow crashing through.  With the conversion Daytona went up 12-3.

In the second half the intensity pick up with several bone crushing runs and cracking tackles.  Midway through the half Gainesville decided to test daytonas kicking game, another mistake on their part.  With Alexis, now at fly half, and Lane "as Cool as Ice" Cooley both with clearing kicks of 50+ meters the hogs were finally out matched.  8-man Scott Sivak snatched the ball on a lucky bounce and with a spectacular run set up the lightening fast Alex Wanyama for an easy try.  The conversion put daytona up 19-3 and it was obvious on the next possesion that the game was quickly slipping away from the Hogs.

On the ensuing kick off Daytona drove the ball down to the 22 Meter line, where the hogs were called for offsides.  The Coconuts took a line out about 7 meters from the try line.  This would set up a brilliant run by Jermiah "Pseduo-Back" Gibbs for a run right through the heart of the forwards.  It was commented later that he was hit more after the Try in celebration then on his way in for the score!

The remainder of the game had both teams knocking on the door for trys, with some excellent running and ball movement.  Easty, Jermiah, Scott, and Brian all had excellent runs, but in the end it was the backs putting the proverbial nail in the coffin.  After the forwards wheeled the scrum, Daytona had the put in on the Gainesville 5 Meter line.  The ball came out fast and was sent out wide where Abe Kirunga took the ball at pace from Alexis for the final try and last play of the game.
